Many people play contact sports which have the potential to cause tooth trauma, including tooth fractures or loss, as well as broken jaws and injuries to lips, cheeks and tongue. Such injuries may cause long-term consequences for teeth and the surrounding tissue. Sports mouth-guards are a good means of protection against this as they act to absorb and spread the impact of contact made to the face. They can be custom made for an excellent fit, so patients can continue enjoying their sport in the knowledge that their teeth are well protected.

The Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommends a custom-fitted mouthguard (as opposed to store-bought mouthguards) for anyone who participates in contact sport or activity with a high risk of collision and hence dental injury.

Store-bought mouthguards are often ill-fitting, can potentially dislodge during wear and tend not to offer the same level of protection as a custom-made mouthguard. Additionally, store-bought mouthguards may interfere with talking or breathing.
